Thoughts for Thinkers: Contentment and Honesty

Contentment is the state of open-hearted relaxed desirelessness. It goes hand in hand with gratitude. When I am grateful for what is at hand, contentment arises. There is no lack in that state. I am filled up. There is only sweetness. No restlessness, no anger, no expectations. Whatever I have is enough. “Dayenu.” I still act, but from a contented heart, not a needy or craving heart. I act because things overflow and want to go out. Contentment is the source of Divine action.

Honesty. Honesty has no blame or judgment in it. Honesty is simply the ability to say what is so. An honest conversation doesn’t add or embellish nor does it hid or minimize. It says what is so for the sake of honesty.

In what way is your ability to be honest related to your level of contentment? Try writing an honest communication to someone you are having difficulty with, and read it back to yourself, looking for embellishment, exaggeration or hidden messages.
