The Progress of Love
In remembrance of my cat
When he got into his first fight and came home with a bloody ear, I wavered and then, chose love
When he brought in his first gopher, leaving the blood and guts in the closet, I hesitated, and then, chose love
When he tramped in with his muddy pawprints just after the floor was washed, I shrugged my shoulders and chose love
When he purred so much, he dribbled and drooled…on my cheek, on my books, on my computer, I wiped it all up and chose love
When he left this world, without warning or hint, I dried my tears, and chose unending love.
